It’s a default fact that creating a LinkedIn page in an integral part of getting a job.

It’s the place where you have to showcase your best assets and successes. The more successful your LinkedIn page is, the more it will attract potential employers, investors, or clients. However, your LinkedIn page is competing with 500 million+ users which makes it stiff. Giving some time to building your profile will distinguish you from the crowd by our tips and ideas. So, let’s open the box.

1. Put time and effort to make it awesome

The more completed your profile is, the better recruiters will find you. LinkedIn will measure the “completeness” of your profile and offer suggestions on how to make it stronger.

2. Be active

The more posts you post on LinkedIn, the more noticed you will be. Also, it’s very important to join and be active in groups related to your field of expertise. Use your status line to announce stuff you’re doing related to your field. Share interesting articles or news. Connect with the leaders in your industry to attract the employers’ attention or clients’ searching as your profile will be 5 times more likely to be viewed. Try to be more creative by avoiding the common words like responsible, creative, effective, analytical, strategic etc.

3. Deal with your profile like your resume

Your resume isn’t just a list of job duties (or, at least, it shouldn’t be)—it’s a place to highlight your best accomplishments. Same goes for your LinkedIn profile: Make sure your experience section is fleshed out with bullet points that describe what you did, how well you did it, and who it impacted.

4. Choose a Great Photo

Upload a clear, friendly, and appropriate professional photo. Take a look at the LinkedIn users of your desired field to learn some examples. “A photo can go a long way to convey passion, energy, charisma, empathy, and other soft skills that are hard to write about.”

5. Write a Headline That Rocks

Your headline doesn’t have to be your job title and company—in fact, especially if you’re looking for jobs, it shouldn’t be. Instead, use that space to succinctly showcase your specialty, value proposition. The more specific you can be about what sets you apart from the competition, the better.

6. Become an Author

All users can write and publish their work on the platform. Share your perspective about what’s going on in your field, or show off your skills as a writer. It’s a great way to get noticed.

7. Update Your Status

Just like on Facebook, you can update your LinkedIn status as often as you wish. So, do! Update it professionally once a week. Your entire network will see your updates, both in their news feeds and in the weekly LinkedIn network updates emails they receive.

Short additional tips:

  • Don’t forget to add your email address (or blog, or Twitter handle, or anywhere you can be found) to the contact information section of your resume. You’d be surprised how many people leave this off!
  • If enough people reject your request and say they don't know you, LinkedIn can shut down your account.
  • Customizing the website links and especially your profile URL is crucial for optimizing your profile.
  • People outside your network can’t see your contact details so make sure to put them in your summary.
